Best snacks for toddlers vs school-age kids

The right snack for a seven year old is not always right for a two year old. As kids grow, their tummy, teeth and energy needs change, so their snacks should change too.

Toddlers (about 1 to 3 years)

Small kids have small tummies, so they snack often and each bite should be worth it. Keep textures safe first: whole nuts, hard round bits and big chunks can cause choking under about age four, so give soft foods, cut things small, and stay with them while they eat. Skip honey before 12 months, and go easy on salt and sugar, because this is the age when taste habits form. Foods with iron and good fats help them grow.

Because our Date & Nut Bites and Chocolate Nut Spread are made with real nuts, they suit older kids best. For toddlers, serve with care and check with your doctor first.

School age (about 4 to 12 years)

Now the job is steady energy for school, tiffins and that after-school hunger. Snacks with some protein and fibre keep kids full far longer than a sugar rush, so lean on slow energy foods like millets, whole grains, nuts and seeds. It also helps to let kids pick, because they make better choices when they feel in charge.

This is the exact gap we made our millet puffs for. We wanted a tiffin snack that was light and crunchy like the packets kids beg for, but built on millets, baked, and free of palm oil. Both flavours, Masala Pop and Tangy Tomato, are gluten free.

"When my son started school, I kept saying no to the snacks he wanted. I made the millet puffs so I could finally say yes to something he loved and still feel good about it."  Shreya, co-founder

Every child is different, especially with allergies or new foods. When in doubt, your doctor knows best.
